Hughes was governor of New York and a U.S. Supreme Court justice who resigned from the court in 1916 to accept the Republican nomination for President. He narrowly lost the 1916 presidential race to incumbent Woodrow Wilson. Hughes later served as U.S. Secretary of State and Chief Justice of the United States.
