The amphibious assault by US forces on the largely unknown island of Guadalcanal in August 1942 was the first US attempt to take the fight to the Japanese. It escalated into a desperate attritional battle by land, air, and sea that would see three major Japanese attempts to take the key airfield on the island in the face of fierce, and successful, US resistance.
